Marcus Rashford has issued an update on his recovery from shoulder injury, revealing that he could be back in training by the end of the week.

The forward has not featured yet this season after undergoing the procedure following his England exploits at Euro 2020 in the summer. Rashford played with pain in his shoulder last campaign but still impressed, missing just one Premier League game.

The latest recovery timeline suggested that he would return after the upcoming international break, putting him in contention for United’s game against Leicester on Saturday 16 October.

Rashford has since issues his own fitness update, tweeting: “Happy Monday. I see the doctor on Friday for a consultation. All being well, I will get the green [light] to join in with contact training again.”

This suggests that Rashford should return to the squad against Leicester, but United’s game against Everton on Saturday will likely come too early for the forward.

United had been faring okay without him at the start of the season but they have started to stutter recently. A Champions League defeat to lowly Young Boys – albeit with 10 men – was followed by an unconvincing victory over West Ham. A few days later, the Hammers knocked them out of the Carabao Cup.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s struggles continued on Saturday when Aston Villa defeated them 1-0 at Old Trafford. They will be looking to return to winning ways against Villarreal midweek, in what is a re-run of last season’s Europa League final – which United lost on penalties.

When Rashford does return to the fray, he will add to United’s already abundant attacking options. Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho were recruited in the summer, joining Edinson Cavani, Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood and the resurgent Jesse Lingard in Solskjaer’s squad.
